NISH Audiology International Master Class Series Conference Starts Friday

Thiruvananthapuram: The National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) will host the first international conference and Audiology International Master Class Series (AIMS 2015), which will get underway in Kovalam on Friday.

Dr. M K Muneer, Minister for Social Welfare and Panchayat will inaugurate the three day conference themed “Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE’s) and New Born Hearing Screening”. To be led by professionals in the field of Audiology, the conference will have as its lead faculty Dr David Kemp, Emeritus Professor, University College London. Dr Kemp is one of the most prominent persons in the area of Audiology who discovered the phenomenon of otoacoustic emissions in humans which led to the invention of machines such as OAE screeners used for primary detection of hearing loss including   newborn children.

Dr Kemp, in his maiden visit to India will lead classes on the latest developments in audiology and early screening along with Dr Ghada Al Malkhy, Assistant Professor- University College London and Prof Deepak Prasher, Emiritus Professor of Audiology at the University College London.

Dr Dimity Dornan, AO Executive Director, Hear and Say, Australia will be the other acclaimed faculty for the programme. She has been the pioneering spirit in Australia for early detection and screening of deaf babies.

The two days Master Class on December 4 and 5 will focus on Auditory Biophysics and Physiology of hearing mechanism and application of OAE with special reference to different auditory disorders.

The conference will be attended by around 250 professionals including few top professionals in Audiology from across the country.

The third day of the conference, December 6, will focus on developing a Newborn Hearing Screening Protocol to be used in the Indian scenario. The plenary and panel session will be led by Dr TP Ashraf, Executive Director, Kerala Social Security Mission, Dr Abraham Paul, Cochin Hospital, Dr Vinay SN (Norway) and Ms Suma Ajith (Australia) along with the expert trainers from the UK.

Other prominent persons addressing the audience include KM Chandrasekhar, Vice Chairman, State Planning Board, G Vijaya Raghavan, Member, State Planning Board, Dr KM Abraham, Additional Chief Secretary of Social Justice, A Shajahan, Secretary – Social Justice and VN Jithendran, Director- Social Justice.
