Sivagiri: Lashing out at attempts to hijack the legacy of Sree Narayana Guru, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday criticized the forces that were trying to communalise the social reformer guru’s teachings. Sonia Gandhi was speaking after inaugurating the 83rd annual Sivagiri Pilgrimage at the Sivagiri Mutt.
Stating that such attempts amount to betraying the guru, Sonia Gandhi said there can be no greater betrayal of Sree Narayana Guru than trying to capture his legacy through communal ideologies.
In what may be seen as a veiled attack on the BJP for its recent closeness to the Vellappally Natesan-led Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, Sonia lambasted the manner in which certain forces and individuals are eyeing power by their divisive agenda.
Reminding the audience that Sree Narayana Guru believed in respecting all religions, she said the social reformer had established the Mutt as a symbol of social reforms and equality.
Adding that the Guru’s teachings are relevant even today, the Congress president lamented that it was worrying that caste discrimination still exists in India, and called for doing away with such practices.
