Malappuram: Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former Defence Minister A.K. Antony today said Congress is the only political party capable of taking on the BJP in the country.
Addressing an election meeting of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) General Secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty, MLA, fielded by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the April 12 bypoll here, he said even the Communist Party (CPI) has admitted that only a secular front included by Congress could effectively contain the Sangh Parivar. “But the CPI (M) was not realising the situation,” he said.
“This party, which has no much presence in the country except in Kerala and Tripura, was attempting to sabotage the move initiated by secular forces to halt the Parivar in the country,” Antony said.
He said his party has joined hands with the CPI (M) in West Bengal only to take on All India Trinamool Congress.
Calling for giving a shock treatment to CPI (M) in Malappuram, he said the victory of Kunhalikutty, would ensure strengthening of secular forces.
Other candidates pitted against Kunhalikutty in the key by-election are M.B. Faizal of the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and N. Sree Prakash of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headed National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Six other candidates are also in the fray in the bypoll caused following the death of IUML President and former Union Minister E Ahamed.
