Munnar: Revenue officials have started evicting encroachments at Devikulam Taluk today. As part of the eviction, they demolished the giant holy Cross built illegally on the Revenue land at Pappathichola. Devikulam Thahasildar led the eviction process.
Meanwhile, police have declared emergency at Pappathichola considering chances of conflict in the area. Earlier, local people had protested against the official action but the police dispersed them. The protesters also parked vehicles on the road and hindered traffic. The officials removed the vehicles using JCB.
Intelligence department found that local political leaders including in CPM in connivance with encroachers and officials, who sanctioned lands by making forged documents, are trying to scuttle the eviction. There are also reports of inciting communal powers to face the eviction process.
More than hundreds of lands have been encroached here in the name of spiritual tourism. A number of illegal sheds have been built near the holy cross here. These temporary sheds have been set fire by the officials.
