Kochi: Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel has announced May 15 as the deadline for the final preparations for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup matches to be held in Kochi. During his visit to Kochi recently, the Minister issued the deadline as he was unhappy with the slow pace of the preparations in Kochi, one of the venues of the Under-17 World Cup.
Goel held a meeting with the concerned officials to review the progress of the works and thus issued the deadline. Later, he also met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and State Sports Minister A.C. Moideen to discuss the preparations. During the meeting, Goel was assured of the completion of works by May 15.
He will also visit Kolkata on May 5 to take stock of the preparations. The Sports Minister will hold meetings with West Bengal Chief Minister, Sports Minister, officials and senior football players.
FIFA Under-17 World Cup matches will be played in New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, Kochi and Guwahati from October 6 to 28.
A FIFA inspection team that visited Kochi in March had expressed displeasure over the way the work was progressing. They also threatened to strike off Kochi as a venue, if work did not finish by May 15.
