Tamil Nadu Govt. to Run River Sand Quarries

Madurai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi. K. Palaniswami last night announced that all the river sand quarries would be run by the State government.

“The government will reduce the sand price for the convenience of the people and the river sand quarrying will be totally stopped in the next two to three years across the State,” he said after inaugurating various development schemes, here.

He appealed to the people to use manufactured sand (M-Sand) as an alternative to the river sand for construction purposes.

The government’s move comes in the wake of large-scale reports of illegal sand quarrying by sand mafia.

Since the river sand was continuously mined, the State was facing a drastic situation of rapid drying up of rivers, water bodies and severe water scarcity leads to drought.

Palaniswami said if the sand quarrying was stopped, the ground water level would increase and hence the government is taking necessary steps towards it.
