Karunanidhi to Make Public Appearance on June 3

Chennai: Nonagenarian leader and DMK President M. Karunanidhi is expected to make his public appearance and meet the party cadres on the occasion of his 94th birthday celebrations on June 3.

DMK Organising Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP R.S. Bharathi said, “Kalaignar will meet the DMK workers at YMCA grounds in the city, where the DMK has planned a massive public meeting on that day.”

Leading political leaders from across the country, including from the Congress, are expected to attend the function.

The function will have the presence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and others, who are likely to share the dais with the DMK Chief.

The DMK has been extending invitations to top national leaders to attend the birthday fete and the grapevine is that either AICC President Sonia Gandhi or Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi is expected to grace the occasion.

DMK Working President M.K. Stalin last week said that the health condition of Karunanidhi was being monitored continuously by the doctors and his condition was stable.

He also said if doctors allowed him, Karunanidhi would meet the Party cadres on June 3.

When asked about reports that the DMK Chief would meet the party cadres on that day, Stalin reiterated his remarks and said Karunanidhi’s condition has been improving well and if doctors gave the permission, he would meet the party cadres.

If Karunanidhi attends his birthday fete on June 3, it would be his first public appearance since December 23 last year when he was discharged from a hospital after getting a week-long treatment for breathing problems due to throat and lung infections.

Karunanidhi, who has been convalescing at his Gopalapuram residence since his discharge from the hospital on December 7, had complained of breathing problems and was readmitted to hospital at night on December 15.

The DMK Patriarch, who took treatment for a drug-induced allergy at his residence, was earlier admitted to Kauvery Hospital on December 1 for “optimisation of nutrition and hydration”.

He was discharged late night on December 7 and was advised rest for a few days, before he was readmitted on December 15 and discharged on December 23, during which he underwent a tracheostomy procedure.

Since then Karunanidhi has been recuperating at home and the DMK released a photo two months ago showing Stalin seeking blessings from his father on his birthday.

Meanwhile, the June 3 meeting has been seen as an effort by the DMK to unite and bring all the secular forces on a single platform to take on the BJP and also keeping in mind the 2019 general polls and the ensuing Presidential elections as the opposition parties are toying with the idea of fielding a common candidate.
