Chennai: Doyen of the industry and noted industrialist and Chairman of Ramco Group of Companies P.R. Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha passed away at Rajapalayam in the southern Tirunelveli district late last night after a brief illness.
Family sources said he was 82. He is survived by his wife R. Sudarsanam, two daughters and son P. R. Venketrama Rajha. His son is the Vice-chairman and Managing Director of the Group.
Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha is the son of Ramco Group Founder, P.A.C. Ramasamy Rajah. Born in 1936, Rajha played a big role in building the Group into a $1 billion industrial conglomerate with interests spanning cotton and synthetic yarn, cement, building products, software solutions, wind-energy and bio-technology, among others.
Popularly known as the Raja of Rajapalayam, he became the Group Chairman at the age of 27 with just two businesses Rajapalayam Mills (a textile mill) and Madras Cements (Ramco Cements) with a single plant capacity of 66,000 tonnes a year. The Group grew well under his stewardship and diversified into various verticals.
Several industrialists, leaders of various political parties, including Chief Minister Edapaddi. K. Palaniswami, AIADMK PTA leader O. Panneerselvam and DMK Working President M.K. Stalin condoled his death.
