Chennai: Reacting to the raids conducted by a nine-member Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team at his and son’s residences, Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram today said the Central government’s aim was to silence his voice and stop him from writing.
The CBI team conducted raids at the residences of Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram this morning after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had issued a show-cause notice to Karti Chidambaram and a company linked to him for alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) laws to the tune of more than Rs 40 crore.
In a statement, Chidambaram said, “The government, using the CBI and other agencies, is targeting my son and his friends.”
”The government’s aim is to silence my voice and stop me from writing, as it has tried to do in the cases of leaders of Opposition parties, journalists, columnists, NGOs and civil society organizations,” Chidambaram said.
”All I will say is, I shall continue to speak and write,” he said.
Observing that the FIPB approval was granted in hundreds of cases, the former Union Minister said the five Secretaries, who constitute the FIPB, the officials of the FIPB Secretariat and the competent authority in each case were the public officials.
”There is no allegation against any of them. There is no allegation against me,” he noted. ”Every case was processed according to law and approval was granted or refused in accordance with the recommendations of the FIPB consisting of five Secretaries to the Government of India,” he added.
