Kozhikode: The All India Youth Federation (AIYF) will conduct a mass convention on May 20, demanding the takeover of land occupied by Grasim Industries, formerly Gwalior Rayons, at Mavoor Town in Kozhikode district.
Talking to reporters, AITUC District General Secretary K G Pankajakshan and AIYF Secretary P Gavas said about 350 acres of land, leased to the Birla group of companies for business purposes, was lying unused after closure of the factory in 2001.
Urging the government to initiate measures to take over the land, they said this should be utilized for setting up new ventures aimed at overall development of the region. CPI state Secretary Kanam Rajendran would inaugurate the convention, they said adding many other senior leaders would attend.
The Mavoor Gwalior Rayons, which produced pulp and fibre and provided direct employment to about 3,000 people, was closed down following labour unrest and raw material shortages.
