Oppn UDF Walks Out of Kerala Assembly over Scrapping of Cauvery Cell

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition Congress-led UDF today staged a walkout from the Kerala Assembly in protest against disallowing the party’s adjournment motion seeking discussion over government’s decision to close down the Cauvery Cell.

Seeking t to move the adjournment motion in this regard, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan of the Congress alleged that the closing down of the Cell functioning in Kerala House in Delhi will affect the interest of the state fighting with other states over inter-water disputes in the apex court.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said many employees working in the Cell have no work and the new decision will help to reschedule their tasks for effective utilisation of their abilities. Thiruvanchoor said the closing down the Cell would be a setback for Kerala in arguing cases relating to interstate linking of river waters.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala alleged that the decision to close down the Cell was taken due to external pressure. Stating that two nodal officers were appointed in New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram to deal with cases related to water disputes, he said former secretary of the Water Department V J Kurian would also head a committee in this regard. After the Chief Minister’s reply, the Opposition members including the BJP staged a walkout in protest against the government stand on the issue.
