Oppn Stages Walk Out Over Fever Outbreak

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress-led UDF Opposition today staged a walkout from the Assembly in protest against disallowing of an adjournment motion seeking a discussion over outbreak of dengue and H1N1 and the government’s failure in taking pre-monsoon preventive measure against the fever.

Seeking to move the adjournment motion in this regard, former Minister VS Sivakumar of the Congress alleged that about 40 people died due to H1N1 in the State so far. The government has been a big failure in taking up an effective pre-monsoon drive to prevent the spread of fever, resulting in the failure of allocating normal assistance of Rs 25,000 per ward to local bodies, he added.

Health Minister K.K. Shylaja said the Government has taken all the measures to prevent the fever and the medicines are available in all the hospitals, including the taluk level, to tackle the unusual situation.

Alleging that the government has failed to ensure fogging in all the municipal and corporation areas with the cooperation of local bodies, Sivakumar alleged that the officials of the Health Department have acted irresponsibly leading to spreading of various types of fever in this rainy season.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala urged the Health Minister to take expert opinion to counter the epidemic in the state. Following the Minister’s reply, Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan denied permission to move the motion. In protest against the Government’s stand on the issue, the Opposition UDF members including Kerala Congress (M), IUML and BJP staged a walk out.
