Stalin Urges Prime Minister to Fast Track River-Linking Project

Chennai: DMK Working President M.K. Stalin today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accord topmost priority and fast track the inter-linking of rivers project as it would solve several inter-State water disputes and result in harmonious relations among the neighbouring States.

In a letter to Modi, he said “the river linking projects would give us immeasurable benefits and relief to the people of the country, especially the farmers, who have been agitating across the country insisting on several basic and practical demands. ”

“Since majority of Indian population depends upon agriculture as the lively source of income, it is imperative on the part of administration to take effective and urgent steps to implement the inter-linking of rivers, as a grand agriculture strategy”, he said.

Stalin said the Supreme Court had observed in “2012 River Linking Judgment” that the inter linking of rivers will save the people living in drought prone zones from hunger and people living in flood-prone areas from destruction caused by the floods”.

“The entire objective of the river linking project could be discerned from the above silver lining of the significant judgment of national importance,” he noted.

While explaining the importance of this national project, the Supreme Court had issued 16 directions to take this project forward to fulfill this ambitious river linking project, which included Special Committee for Inter-Linking of River with State Participation.
