Chennai: Legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan’s statue on the intersection of Dr Radhakrishnan Salai and Kamarajar Salai on the Marina beach front was removed from the spot by officials of the PWD department.
The statue would be re-located at the memorial being constructed for him at Adyar area in the city. Officials had removed the statue at midnight and there were no traffic problems.
Though the statue was removed following a High Court order to ease traffic congestion at the busy junction, traffic jam was witnessed in the junction this morning.
It would take a few days to study the impact, police sources said. It all started around a year ago when the State government, in an undertaking to the High Court, offered to remove the statue from the spot and install it at his memorial as it was hindering free flow of traffic.
But Nadigarthilagam Sivaji Social Welfare Association, in a couple of petitions in the High Court, requested not to install the actor’s statue at the memorial.
Instead the organisation requested the statue to be installed prominently on the Marina beach road itself, along with those of Mahatma Gandhi and K. Kamaraj.
But the High Court, in its recent ruling had made it clear that the pendency of a petition seeking the relocation of the statue to another spot on the Marina, would not come in the way of the State government shifting it to the memorial.
