Maoist Leader, Gang Offer to Surrender Before Cops

Malappuram: A senior Maoist leader, along with his 10-member gang, has offered to surrender before police, apparently after his family members received threat on their lives from Naxal groups.

According to police sources, Soman, a member of Western Ghats zonal committee of CPI (Maoist), had expressed his interest to surrender before police.

Steps were being taken to establish contact with Soman, who was absconding since 2010 and later joined the People Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) of the party in 2014.

Sources said the immediate provocation for the surrender offer was due to threats faced by Soman, a native of Kalpetta in Wynad  district, and his family members from Naxal groups.

Police have already started efforts to establish communication with Soman and are ready to provide adequate security to his family if they surrender, they added.
