Tribals in Kerala to Get Free Onam Kit, Assembly Told

Thiruvananthapuram: Onam kits with various food articles will be distributed free of cost to 155,000 scheduled tribe families in Kerala, the State Assembly was told today.

Replying to questions, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Minister A.K. Balan said the free kit containing ‘Onakkodi’ (dhoti for men and Kerala saree for women) would also be given to all those above the age of 60 years.

As many as 51,496 persons would get benefit from the scheme. He said the distribution would be completed before Onam, which would be celebrated on September 4.

11,474 tribals remain unemployed

As many as 11,474 educated tribal youths are remaining jobless in Kerala, the Assembly was informed.

Replying to questions, Minister Balan said of the educated unemployed tribal youths, as many as 354 are professional medical and engineering degree holders.

He said there are 237 youths, who have completed nursing courses. Besides, there were 482 post graduates and 670 other technical certificate holders.

A data bank of qualified tribal youth had already been given to various departments for absorbing them into the government services.
