UDF Members Stage Walkout from Kerala Assembly

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress-led UDF members today staged a walkout in Kerala Assembly alleging that the government has failed to take steps to contain the outbreak of various kinds of fevers that have led to the death of hundreds of people, and H1N1 to thousands of people in the State.

Seeking the leave of the House to move an adjournment motion in this regard, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan alleged that the Health Minister was misleading the House by giving false information over the actual death due to fever outbreak in the State.

In her reply, Health Minister K.K. Shailaja said only 474 people died due to outbreak of various fever, including Dengue, H1N1 and other communicable diseases in the State this year.

However, the Congress member alleged that Minister was presenting the details received only from the government hospitals.

“About 1,000 people died due to fever and 15,000 were affected with H1N1 and the Health Department was hiding the data in this regard from private hospitals,” he alleged.

He added that the Minister is unable to give the actual number of death due to fever as DMOs have been instructed to not report the death due to fever.

The Minister also said the Health Department took several steps, including the appointment of several vacant posts of doctors, to control the outbreak of dengue in the capital city and other communicable diseases in the State.

Following the Minister’s reply, Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan disallowed the adjournment motion leading to the walkout of the Opposition members in protest against the government’s stand denying discussion on the issue.
