Malappuram: Kerala Assembly Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan will inaugurate the newly-established coastal police station here today. The station has been set up for bolstering the security of North Kerala district.
According to official sources, the police team will hold routine patrol and check whether any illegal activities, including drug transportation and illegal fishing, are taking place through the sea.
It will also help fishermen get timely assistance during accidents in sea. The Home Department has appointed 25 policemen, including two Sub Inspectors, at the station.
The team will work under the Circle inspector. The strength of the team will be increased as per future needs.
The area from Kappirikad to Vallikkunnu comes under the jurisdiction of the coastal police here.
The station will be given boats to hold inspections and lead rescue operations. Three more employees, including a driver and a mechanic, will be appointed by department to operate the boat.
The policemen will be given training in carrying out raids and dealing with accident cases in sea.
