Thiruvananthapuram: Seven former sportspersons, including veteran hockey coach P.A. Raphel, has been conferred with Dronacharya Award 2017. Raphel has been given the honour as lifetime achievement.
Para athlete Devendra and hockey player Sardar Singh have bagged Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the highest honour for sportspersons in India.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports today announced the prestigious awards in the Indian sports field.
While Bhupender Singh (Athletics), Syed Shahid Hakim (Football) and Sumarai Tete (Hockey) have been selected for Dhyan Chand Award, 17 players have got Arjuna Award.
The awardees will receive their awards from the President at a function to be held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29.
Apart from a medal and a citation, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee will receive a cash prize of Rs. 7.5 lakh. Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awardees will receive statuettes, certificates and cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh each.
