Kovalam MLA M. Vincent Granted Bail in Rape Case

Thiruvananthapuram: A district court here granted a conditional bail to Kovalam MLA M. Vincent, who was arrested in connection with the alleged sexual harassment of a woman, today. The bail was granted with the condition that the MLA should not enter the ward where the victim resides.

Earlier, the prosecution had informed the court that giving bail with strict conditions to the MLA will not be opposed. Vincent got bail after spending 34 days in jail.

His lawyer told the court that the complainant has been under treatment for mental illness for the last 18 years.

The incident came to light when the Balaramapuram native woman tried to commit suicide by consuming heavy dose of pills and got admitted to a private hospital at Aralumoodu. Her husband lodged a complaint with the police. After regaining consciousness, the woman gave a statement to the Magistrate that A. Vincent MLA had sexually assaulted her.

When the incident became controversial, an investigative team was formed under City Police Commissioner Ajitha Begum. After taking statement from the victim, the probe team arrested Vincent.

In the court, the MLA’s counsel said the charges against him were false and politically motivated. He was put up as a remand prisoner at the Sub-Jail in Neyyattinkara.
