Dera Chief Gets 10-Yr Imprisonment in Rape Case

Rohtak: A CBI court, headed by Special Judge Jagdeep Singh, today awarded 10 years’ imprisonment to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was convicted of rape on August 25.

The court proceedings began at 2.30 pm. The CBI judge allotted 10 minutes for each side to put forth their arguments.

While prosecution demanded maximum punishment for Singh, counsel for the Dera chief argued that sect head is a social worker and has worked for welfare of people, so the court should take a lenient view when awarding the quantum of sentence.

Earlier, the judge was flown in a helicopter into the special courtroom set up inside the Sunaria Jail. Followers of Dera Sacha Sauda in Punjab, Haryana and other cities, burned down gas stations and train stations and torched vehicles after Dera chief Ram Rahim was announced guilty of rape by the special CBI court in Panchkula on Friday.

At least 38 people were killed and more than 200 injured in the violence in Haryana. The 50-year-old “Guru of Bling” has been lodged in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail.

Rohtak has been placed under multi-layered security; 28 companies of paramilitary troops have been stationed in the town and Dera followers are not being allowed to enter the district.
