Muneer Calls for Stringent Action on Alleged FGM

Kozhikode: Senior Indian Union Muslim League leader and Deputy Opposition leader in Kerala Assembly Dr M.K. Muneer, MLA today demanded stringent action on alleged Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) being practised in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram districts in the State.

Referring to reports appeared in a section of media, Dr Muneer, in a release here, said it was horrific to note that the FGM practised by tribals in Africa were being carried out in this district and certain other parts of the State too.

Demanding a comprehensive probe into the issue, he said the doctors, who had purportedly carried out the illegal practice should be taken into custody to find out details of the victims.

He also called upon the government to ensure protection of such victims in the State.

The media reports followed a recent investigation by a Non-Government Organization (NGO) Sahiyo, which found that FGM – the ritual of cutting parts of the female genitalia – is also being practised by a clinic in the district.

Two doctors of the clinic admitted that they perform the procedure of “sunnath”, or circumcision, on both boys and girls, the reports added.
