Thiruvananthapuram: The State government has waived the minimum distance limit of bars from schools and places of worship from 200 metres to 50 metres. Additional Chief Secretary Tom Jose, who is also in-charge of Excise Department, issued an order in this regard on August 29, according to reports.
The order covers bars attached to four and five star hotels as well as heritage hotels. It is a relief for bars, which are on the brink of closure following the Supreme Court verdict regarding liquor outlets operating on the sides of national and State highways.
Meanwhile, responding to the order of the government, Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran alleged that the latest order repeatedly declare the government’s allegiance to liquor barons. Stating that the order is an Onam gift to the bar owners, Sudheeran said the liquor policy and further measures, including this order are the reflection of the greatest political corruption Kerala has ever seen.
In a post on his social media page, he said the government is not with the people but with the bar owners, land mafia and self-financing managements.
