Mangaluru: Hundreds of BJP leaders and workers were taken into custody by the police when they tried to take out a bike rally defying prohibitory orders clamped near Jyothi Circle here today.
The agitation was mainly against the alleged murder of RSS and BJP workers in the State and also demanding a CBI inquiry into murder of journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh, who was murdered in Bengaluru on Tuesday night in front of her House.
Police had granted permission to the BJP to hold public meeting at Nehru ground, but the workers, after the meeting addressed by leaders, including BJP State President B.S. Yeddyurappa, Opposition leaders in the Legislative Assembly and Council Jagadish Shettar and K.S. Eshwarappa respectively, and others, tried to assemble at Jyothi Circle for taking out bike rally.
The workers even forcefully removed barricades put up to prevent them from marching towards rally point when they were taken into custody.
Police were forced to resort to mild lathi-charge at some places to prevent the workers and they were taken in the buses to remote places.
After the attempt to take bike rally was thwarted by the police, the workers started taking out padayatra to Deputy Commissioner’s office to lay siege to the Office.
On September 5 also, the BJP workers from various parts of Karnataka tried to take out bike rally to reach Mangaluru today.
However, police succeeded in preventing them by taking thousands of BJP workers and leaders into custody.
