Ajay Tharayil Calls for Entry for Non-Hindus in Temples

Thiruvananthapuram: Devaswom Board member Ajay Tharayil today said that non-Hindus should also be permitted to enter the temples under the Travancore Devaswom Board.

In a Facebook post, he said: “I hope the Board President and other members would support my stand in it.”

“Many non-Hindus believing in temple and idol worships knowingly and unknowingly enter the temple. In such situations, there is no importance for Board’s decision of not allowing them to enter the temples. Giving a declaration by a person that he is a believer of Hinduism is an indirect religious conversion. It is not the responsibility of the Board to encourage conversion of religion. The Board should issue a new order after amending the one issued in 1952,” he said.

Responding to his remarks, Devawom Board President Prayar Gopalakrishnan said that the demand of Ajay Tharayil will be discussed in the next Devaswom Board meeting.

Meanwhile, the Malabar Devaswom Board (MDB) legal reforms committee has recommended that the administration of temples under the Board be vested in it rather than with traditional trustees.

However, the right of traditional trustees to carry out traditional rituals would be protected. In a press release on Thursday, the Board said that until now appointments to major temples under the Devaswom and disciplinary actions were taken by the traditional trustees. This should now be the prerogative of the Board.

These recommendations of the reforms committee come at a time when complaints were being raised about the way the offerings of devotees, temple properties and appointments were being misused.
