Child Rape, Sexual Abuse Have Become Moral Epidemic: Kailash Satyarthi

Kanyakumari: Child rape and sexual abuse have become a moral epidemic that haunts the nation, Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi said here today.

Launching the “Bharat Yatra” to create awareness against child trafficking and sexual abuse, Satyarthi said, “We can no longer remain silent spectators. Our silence is breeding more violence. That is why the Bharat Yatra is the beginning of an all-out war against rape, abuse and trafficking.”

“We hereby declare that we refuse to let victims and their families live in fear while the rapists roam free and fearless. I refuse to accept that eight children go missing and two are raped every hour,” he said.

“Each time if a single child is in danger, India is in danger. Bharat Yatra is to make India safe again for our children. Make no mistake: this will be a decisive war; a war to reclaim the morality of the Indian soul,” Satyarthi remarked.

He also appealed to the youth to join the march to ensure the safety and security of the children, who are the future of India.

“Bharat Yatra” was flagged off from Vivekananda Rock Memorial in the presence of Union Minister of State for Finance and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan, who represents Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat.

The Yatra is aimed to end child trafficking and abuse, and 10,000 children are participating in the march led by the Nobel Peace Laureate.

The Yatra will culminate in New Delhi on October 16 covering 11,000 kilometres across 22 States. In Tamil Nadu, the Yatra will pass through Kanyakumari, Salem, Madurai, Vellore and Chennai.

“My war to end all forms of abuse against children starts on September 11. Are you with me?” Satyarthi asked hundreds of people gathered at the venue.

Speaking on the occasion, Pon Radhakrishnan said the Centre is taking various steps, including awareness campaigns to stop crimes against children and women.

Extending full support to the Yatra, the Union Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving special attention to eradicate such evils from the society.

A message from the Prime Minister was also read out at the inaugural function.
