Cultural Extravaganza Marks Nuakhai Festival of Odisha  

New Delhi: Nuakhai festival, celebrated by the farmers of Western Odisha, was organised at the Thyagraj Stadium here by Juhar family. This festival marks the harvest of paddy crop in the State. On this occasion, people remember their ancestors and get the blessings of the elders.

During the celebration, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas and Skills Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Tribal Affairs Minister Juam Oral and MP Prabhas Kumar Singh were present as the chief guests.

Speaking on the occasion, Dharmendra Pradhan said that there are many beliefs associated with this festival. Nuakhai festival is completed with nine colours of rituals.  Jual Oram thanked the Juhar Family for celebrating this festival on a large scale in New Delhi.


As part of a ritual, all people treat their family and neighbours with a feast of the new rice.

Nuakhai festival is celebrated largely in the districts of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bodh, Sonpur and Nuapada in Odisha.

Colourful cultural programmes were also presented as part of the celebration by Natraj Kala Parishad.  Sujit Mehr organised a fashion show.

Odisha filmmaker Jitendra Mishra, singer Reshma Rani Das, dancers Shasvat Joshi and Padmini Panigrahi were also present.
