Thiruvananthapuram: Alphons Kannanthanam, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Culture, and Tourism, may be keen on having the high profile civil servant and former Kozhikode District Collector N Prasanth as his private secretary. But the, his own party men in home state Kerala are not a happy lot when it comes to such a proposal.
The Kerala BJP has swept away the idea and is now knocking at the door of the Prime Minister and the Central leadership against the appointment.
The Kerala BJP’s opposition banks on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier diktat that no former government officials should be considered for working with the NDA Ministers. Pointing out that N.Prasanth has worked as the Private Secretary of former UDF Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala , the BJP in Kerala states that appointing N. Prasanth as Alphons Kannanthanam ’s Private Secretary would be against the PM’s view.
The party wants to appoint another IAS officer from Kerala as Alphons Kannanthanam’s Private Secretary. The reason they hold aloft to support their stand is that a Keralite should be looking after the Kerala Tourism development programs envisioned by the Union Ministry.
N Prasanth has always been in the news, and this 2007 batch IAS officer took his popularity to the apex slot after he was appointed District Collector of Kozhikode in 2015. The young bureaucrat deployed the tricks of the social media to reach out to people, and rolled out many a development initiative in Kozhikode. The programmes, such as Compassionate Kozhikode and Operation Sulaimani, had tasted success overnight.
