Kochi: Calling upon the financially and technically sound Cochin Shipyard to look at expanding to other places in the country, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari today assured the Kerala-based shipyard that he would make available land across the country to bring up CSL branches. Adding that it would be a good start, Gadkari said the country “can make huge investment as we have huge potential in the sector.
Performing the ground breaking ceremony for the public sector Cochin Shipyard Ltd to kick off work on its Rs 970-crore International Ship repair Facility (ISRF), Gadkari said: “This is a historic movement in the history of Kerala and Cochin Shipyard. This will give 6000 job opportunities to the state directly and indirectly. As of now our country is facing lack of technologies for the ship repairing and maintenance activities. With this new facility we need not to depend other countries.”
The ground breaking ceremony was organized at the Cochin Port Trust where CSL has leased out a 40-acre plot for developing the project. ISRF is a Rs 970 crore project approved by the Government of India in May 2016. CSL will set up a ship lift system of size 130 m x 25 m with lifting capacity of 6000 Tons and 6 workstations. The facility can repair up to 85 vessels, and CSL will thereby be almost doubling the number of ships that can be repaired per year.
Pointing out that without developments, there will be no job opportunities, Gadkari added that without job opportunities we can’t eradicate the poverty.
“It is a red letter day for not only CSL, but the entire state of Kerala and the nation as a whole since the ship repair facility of global standard is being designed to cater to the needs of ships from across the world,” said Cochin Shipyard Chairman and Managing Director Madhu S Nair.
“On completion within two years, Kochi will be a Major Ship Repair hub in India generating an additional employment of around 1500 personnel”, Nair said.
AC Moideen, Minister for Industries, Sports and Youth Affairs, Prof. K.V.Thomas MP, MLAs Hibi Eden, KJ Maxi, Mayor Soumini Jain, Paul Antony IAS were also present during the occasion.
